In Composition. The frequent recurrence of the same letter, chiefly at the commencement of different words. This is sometimes resorted to, •specially in poetry, for the production of effect. In the Celtic languages, alliteration was a recognised ornament fai versification: it was so likewise in the early Gothic 33 ALLUSION. tongues; and in old English there are entire poems composed in alliterative metre, of which the celebrated Vision of Piers Ploughman is the most remarkable.
