The body is covered with cycloidal, overlapping, smooth scales; the head is protected by a kind of helmet formed of the anchylosed cranial bones, and the teeth are conical in form and nearly equal in size. The two dorsal fins are placed far back; tail heterocercal. All the species are Devonian. ( Nicholson .)
