a borough of Pennsylvania, McKean co. Itis on the Baltimore Ohio and the Kane and Elk It is situated on high ground and favorite health resort. Its industries clude the manufacture of gla and lumber. It is the seat of the Masonic Hospital. Pop, 1920, 7,283. an American Arctic explorer, b. in delphia, Pa. He graduated from medical school of the University Pennsylvania, in 1842, then entered U. S. Navy as a surgeon. After years of extensive travel he home and was a igned by the ment to make a survey of the Gulf Mexico. In 1850 he joined the Grinnell Expedition to the Arctic as surgeon, which sailed in search John Franklin. After his return he again sent out, this time in command the Advance, on what was known second Grinnell Expedition, and frozen in in latitude 78° 43’ N. the ship was abandoned, and with the lo of one man by an accident, whole ship’s company sledged ten over the ice to Green land, a distance nell Expedition in Search of Sir Franklin—a Personal Narrative,’ and ‘‘The Second Grinnell Expedition,” 1856.
