a famous Indian chief of the Apache tribe. He headed many outbreaks in Arizona and other parts of the Southwest, and was one of the most agre ive and cruel of the Indian leaders in that region. In 1886 he surrendered to General Crook, but while negotiations for an agreement were under way, he escaped to the mountains where he remained until compelled to surrender by General Miles. He was imprisoned at te Sill, Oklahoma, until his death, in 1907. III., and besieged Byzantium; his troops mutinied; committed suicide.
