Cashew nut

(Bot.) The fruit of Anacardium occident ale, related to sumach, and a native of the West Indies, but now widely grown in the tropics. This tree grows to 16 or more feet in height, and bears edible, kidney-shaped fruits, known as C. N., which when subjected to pre ure yield an oil resembling olive oil. The fruits are borne on the enlarged and fleshy ends of the stem, and po e a pleasantly acid flavor. The poisonous principle inherent in several species of sumac is present in a degree in the C. N., which, when roasted, yield fumes which are apt to cause inflammation in the face and eyes.
