Edwin, an American diplomatist; born in Chilli cot he, O., in July, 1848. He went to Japan in 1873, becoming succe ively United States Second Secretary of Legation, First Secretary of Legation, and, from 1893 to 1897, United States Minister. During the war between China and Japan the Chinese government placed its interests in Japan in his care.
