JOHN HANNING, (spek.) an English explorer, B. inco. Somerset, 1827. After some years of service in the Indian army,he accompanied Capt. Burton (q. v.) on his travels in Central Africa, and discovered Lake Victoria N'yanza, in 1858. He also claimed to have found the sources of the Nile in 1862, by following up that river to the N'yanza. D. 1864. [s. 845]
