Comte

AUGUSTE, (komt,) a French philosopher, B. 1795. He early became a disciple of St. Simon, and on his death, 1825, C. founded a school of his own, known as that of l'ositive Philosophy, and filled the position of profe or of Mathematics in the Ecole Poly technique. In his later days, he e ayed to introduce the worship of Humanity, and a umed the title of first priest of that new religion. Among his works-which have had no small influence over the thought of the age-the greater are the grand text-book of his system, Cours de Philosophie Positive (1830-42); Culte System at i que de l'Human ité; and the Traité de So cio logie. His works have been translated into English by Harriet Martin eau, and an important analysis of his system is contained in John Stuart Mill's Auguste Comte and Positivism (1865). D. 1857. [s. 213]
