North Sea and Baltic Canal

Ship canal in Pru ia constructed from 1887-1895. It commences at the mouth of the Elbe above Brunsbuttel, joins the Eider near Wit ten bergen, following this river to Rendsburg, and from there utilizing the Eider Canal, terminating at Holtenau, 24 m. n. of Kiel. Total length 61 m., average depth 28 ft. The canal shortens considerably the sea route between the Baltic ports and the British coast s. of Newcastle. The cost of construction was £7.800,000.
