1st: A rope or purchase by means of which a clew of a course, i. e: a square fore-sail, main-sail or cro jack etc. is pulled down and kept in desired position. 2nd: A rope, by means of which the fore lower corner of a staysail or boom-sail is kept down and in place. 3rd: A rope by which the outer lower corner of a studding-sail is pulled to the outer end of the studding-sail-boom, and kept in position.
