Chillon

(shil'lawng,) a castle of Switzerland, picturesquely situated on an isolated rock at the E. extremity of Lake Leman, 6 m. from Vevay. Built in 1238, by A made us IV. Duke of Savoy, it served long as a state prison, in which Bonnivard (q. v.) was immured. His fate is commemorated in Byron's fine poem, The Pris. oner of Chillon. [s. 176]
