Berkeley

GEORGE, (burk'le,) an eminent philosopher, and bishop of Cloyne, B. in Ireland, 1684. On his return from a visit to America, B. was raised to the episcopate. In philosophy he is an Idealist, and his doctrines are the natural reaction against the prevalent materialism of his age. His most important works are the Principles of Human Knowledge; Minute Philosopher; and Theory of Vision. D. 1753. Berkeley, a N.E. co. of W.
