AMPHIARTHROSIS

(Lat.), n. f£. A?m(a*m)-fi?-a8r-thro’si?s, Gen., amphiarthro’seos (-sis). For deriv., see Amphi-* and ARTHROsis. Fr., amphiarthrose. Ger., Amphiarthrose, Halbgelenk. It., anfiartrosi. Sp., Ue.: diarthrosis synarthrodica, symphysis. A form of articulation intermediate between diarthrosis and syné rosis (q. v.), in which the articulating bony surfaces are separated by an el ic substance to which both are attached, so that the mobility is ee may be exerted in all directions. The articulations of the lies of the vertebrae are examples, [Winslow (C): L, 91.) The term has also been apolied to the carpal articulations, and So emmer ring made it include symphysis and synchondrosis. [A, 301.]
