The radicle, C,H, of b. alcohol; a colorle , oily liquid, lighter than water, footy odorous. [A, 301; B; L, 108.]—B. acetate. Fr., acétate de butyle. Ger. B'acetat, e igsaures B. A body, O,H,.OC,H,0 = CH, 20x, isomeric with caproic acid. Four bodies having this formula are known, all liquids boiling at_from 96° to 125°C. [B, 4.]—B. alcohol. Fr., alcool butylique. Ger.,. Syn.: butylic {or tetrylic) alcohol, hydrate (or hydrated oxide) ee (or tetryl), Lali ap butylate (or tetryl ate), propyl carbinol. monatomic alechol formed by substituting a molecule of b. for an atom of hydrogen in water, or by substituting a molecule of hydroxy] for an atom of hydrogen in UBER: or by substituting a molecule of propyl for an atom of hydrogen in carbinol; formula, C,H,)0 = C,H,.OH, or C,H,.CH,.0H. Four isomeric varieties are known; 1. Normal mary b. a. (propyl carbinol), CH, — CH, — CH, — CH,.OH, a colorle liquid of a pleasant odor, boiling at 116° C. 2. Normal secondary b. a. (ethyl me thy] carbinol), CH, — CH, — CH.OH — CH,, a liquid boiling at 97° C. 3. Primary isobutyl alcohol (isopropy! carbinol, fermentation b.), (CH3), — CH — CH,.OH, a liquid having a strong odor of fusel oil, boiling at 106° C. 4. Tertiary isobutyl alcohol (trimethyl carbinol), (CH3), = CH.OH — CHg, a Binal contained in the fusel oils, boiling at abont 83° C. [B,2.1—B. aldehyde. Butyric aldehyde. A compound of b. and bromine, C,H,.Br. Two isomeric varieties exist: 1. Primary bromide of normal b,, CHs — CH, — CH, — CH,Br, a pit boiling at 100° C. & Primary bromide of isobutyl, (CHe), — CH —CH,Br, à liquid boiling at 92° C. butyrate. Ger.,. Syn.: b. isocyanide (or pseudo cyanide), A liquid’ C,H, —- N20, derived from trimethyl methane, boiling at about 115°C. [B.|—B. carb imide. Ger., B’carbimid, See B. i so thiocyanate.—B. carbinol. See Amy alcohol.—B. carbonate. Ger.,. Carbonate of isobutyl, (C,H9),.CO,, a liquid boiling at 190°C, [B.]—B’carbonic acid. Fr., acide b'carbon i que. Ger., B'carbonsäure, Bkohlensiure. An acid which may be regarded as derived from carbonic acid by the substitution of b. for hydroxyl. Acids of this formula, C,H,.HCO,, are normal b'carbonic, B-b'carbonic, iso-b’carbonic, and ‘trimethyl carb in carbonic acids. [B, 4.] See under VALERIC ACID.—B’chloral. Primary chloride of isobuty!, (CHs)9— CH — CH, Cl, a Nquid boiling at 68° C. 4. Tertiary chloride of isobutyl, (CHg), — C.C1— CH, a vei boiling at about 50° C. Fr., cyanure de butyle. Ger.,. [B.J—B,. cyanide. A compound of the formula C,H,.CN, )”/N. Several isomeric varieties are known. Cyanide of normal b. (vale ron it rile), CHs — (CH)3 — CN, is a liquid boiling at 140° C. Grama of secondary b. (i so vale ron it rile), (CHg),— CH — CH, — CN, is a colorle oily liquid boiling at 127° C. Cyanide of tertiary b. (trimethyl acetonitrile), (CHs)s=C.CN, is a crystalline body melting at 16° C. to form a colorle oily liquid. [B, 4.]—B. hydride. TANE.—B. hydrosulphide. See mercaptan.—B. iodide. Fr.,iodure de butyle. Ger., Butyljodür. A compound, C,H,I, of which there are four isomeric forms, corresponding to the four varieties of b. aleohol; all liquids boiling at from 99° to 129°C. [B.J—B. isocyanide. Fr., isocyanure de butyle. Ger.,. See B. carb a mine.—B. isosulphocyanate, B. i so thiocyanate. Fr., i so sulfo cyanate de butyle, Ger.,. A compound, C,H,.CNS, of which several isomeric forms are known. ‘The first, derived ftom normal b., is a liquid boiling at 167° C.; the second, derived from methyl ethyl carbinol, is a liquid of penetrating odor, boiling at about 160° C., forming the chief constituent of oil of Cochlear i a officinal is; the third, derived from isobutyl alcohol, is a rae boiling at about 162° C. [B.J—B. mercaptan. A compound, C,H,.H.S,of which there are several isomeric forms, all liquids of à disagreeable odor boiling at from 88° to 98° C.; that of secondary b. has the odor of asafoetida. {B.J—B. mustard-oil. Ger.,. See B. i so thiocyanate. B. nitrate. Fr., azotate de butyle. Ger.,. Nitrate of peanyy (CH53)» — CH — CH,.O.NO,, a liquid boiling at 123° (Strecker) or 130° C. (Roscoe and‘Schorl emmer). [B.]—B. nitrite. Fr., azotite de butyle. Ger.,. Nitrite of trimethyl car by], (CHs)3 = C.O.NO, a yellowish oily substance boiling at about 77° C. [B.]—B. pseudo cyanide.
