Eagle

a gold coin of the value of ten dollars. So called because of the figure of the national bird, which is stamped on the reverse. It was authorized in 1792 and coinage was begun in 1794. It has always been legal tender to an unlimited amount. The first delivery of eagles was made September 22, 1795, 400 in number. It was not coined from 1805 to 1837. By Act of 1834 its weight was slightly reduced.
