Peat

(pět.) [From Isl. pyt.] A congeries of decayed vegetable matter, generally including trunks of trees, leaves, fruits, stringy fibres, and the remains of aquatic mo es. It occurs in extensive beds, called peat-mo es, occupying the surface of the soil, or covered to the depth of a few feet with sand, gravel, . It is the common fuel of large districts of Wales and Scotland, and of some parts of England where coals are very dear. [s. 691]
