Exarch

(ěkz'ark.) [Gr. exarchos.] (Anc. Hist.) A prefect, governor, or viceroy of the Byzantine empire, representing his govt. in the reconquered pro vs. of Italy and Africa;- they also bore the name of patricians.(Eccl.) In the Greek Church, a commi ioner sent by the Patriarch to make a visitation of episcopal sees in the pro vs., with the object of seeing that the clergy perform their duty. [s. 348]
