In Delaware co., Pa., chartered in 1856; first institution of college grade established by the Society of Friends in the U. S. It grew out of a high school founded 1832. It has a large farm, ample halls, with two observatories, chemical, mechanical, biological, and physical laboratories; a library of 32,000 vols.; 10 profe ors with 8 a istants; 99 students (1896); 559 graduates.
