Verona

(va-ro'nah.) a celebrated city of Italy, C. of a p. of same name, in Lombardy, on the Adige, 22 miles N.N.E. of Mantua. This is a quaint and highly interesting place viewed architecturally, and po e es the finest Roman amphitheatre now remaining. V. has considerable manu fs. of silk and woollen stuffs, ., and was a city of importance in the time of Cæsar. In 1822 a Congre of the powers of Europe was held here. Pop. 56,418.
