The pamphlet spread over Europe, and for centuries claimants appeared under different names. Around the legend has grown a ma of lit., the subject being specially popular during the Romantic revival. The real source of the legend is probably Matthew 1628, ‘There be some of them that stand here which shall in no wise taste of death till they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.’
