Negro Plot

In New York in 1741 several fires, aided by two pretended confe ions, induced a belief that the negro slaves, who then constituted ab. one-fifth of the population, had banded together to burn the town and murder the whites. An insane panic, affecting lawyers and judges, resulted in the burning of 13 negroes, the hanging of 18, and the transportation of 71, besides the execution of a white schoolmaster. The Negro race is thus characterized: legs, weakly developed; great toe, partly prehensile; arms, long; skulls, prognathus and dolichocephalic; facial angle 70° (in Caucasians, 82°), wt. of brain, 35 oz. (in Gorilla 20, and average European 45); nose depre ed, with dilated nostrils and concave bridge; cheek-bones and lips prominent; cranial bones extra thick; head covered with short curly wool, not true hair; skin with sparse development of hairs and secreting a peculiar odor. The race is emotional, susceptible to external influences, weak in moral perceptions, undeveloped both religiously and politically. Some tribes are cannibals. Population, ab. 130 millions in Africa, and 20 millions in other countries, of which U. S. contains 6 millions and the W. I. islands nearly 4 millions. The offspring of parents, one of whom is black and the other white, is a mulatto; of a mulatto and a white, a quadroon; of a quadroon and a white, an octoroon.
