Lat. tanagr (a); Lat. fem. pl. adj. suff. -idœ.] Ornith.: A family of Fringilliformes, formerly made a sub-family of Fringillide, with forty-three genera, almost peculiar to the Neo tropical region, only one genus extending into the eastern United States and the Rocky Mountains. Primaries nine; 3999 bill usually conical, sometimes depre ed or attenuated, usually more or le triangular at base, and with the cutting edges not much inflected, sometimes toothed or notched; legs short, claws curved. tăn-a-gri-næ, s. pl .
