Conscience Money

Payments made usually anonymously to the government by people who have defrauded the customs or evaded taxes and whose conscience prompts them to restitution. Considerable sums are paid into the Treasury in this manner every year, both in England and the U. S.; in the former, amounting to £51,375 from 1873 to 1880 inclusive, and in the latter to $74,973.22 from 1881 to 1891 inclusive.
