Koussevitzky

(kd0-sé-vét’-ské), Serge, b. Vishni Volochok, Ru ia, June 30, 1874; conductor; grad. Cons., 1894; hon. Mus. D., Brown Univ., 1926; after 1900 prof. at the Philh. Mus, School, Moscow; began career as double-ba virtuoso in the Imp. The at. orch. there; in 1910 founded his own symph. orch, which he led until 1918, making 3 tours of Ru ia with it on chartered steamer down the Volga; his reputation as a cond. grew rapidly when he led the Kou evitzky Concerts in Paris after 1920, winning rank as one: of the most brilliant leaders of the day, and making guest appearances in Germany, Italy, England and Spain; since 1924, cond. of the Boston Symph., where he has maintained an aggre ive campaign for the introd. of outstanding modern compositions; house for Ru ian music in Paris, 1909; French Legion of Honour, 1924; cond. Berks hire Fest., Stock bridge, Ma ., after 1935.
