RALPH WALDO, (em'ür-sün,) an American poet and e ayist, B. in Boston, 1803, graduated at Harvard College in 1821. In 1829 he entered the Unitarian ministry, which he left in 1832. He has since achieved a world-wide reputation by his philosophical lectures and published works, the chief of the latter being his famous E ays, the first series of which appeared in 1841, ane the second in 1844. In 1846, he collected and publish ea his poems. In 1850, appeared Representative Men; in 1856, English Traits; and in 1860, The Conduct of Life. [s. 328]
