CAVAIGNAC, LOUIS EUGENE

(1802-57), French soldier and politi born in Paris. Entered the army as. engineer in 1824; served in Morea and afterwards in Algeria where he won great distinction. In 1848 the provisional government made him governor general of Algeria, but the troubles of the revolutionaries in Paris led to his as Minister of War. He was appointed dictator to quell the insurgents, and drove them with great bloodshed to the barricades. In the same year he was made President of the Council. He was defeated as a candidate for the eee aency of the republic by Louis apoleon and retired into the ranks of the Opposition, which led to his imprisonment at the coup d’etat of 1851.
