Kiel, (kēl,) a handsome seaport-town of Pru ia, p. of Schleswig-Holstein, at the bottom of a large bay of the Baltic, which admits large ships to anchor close to the town; Lat. 54° 20′ N., Lon. 10° 7′ E. It po e es a flourishing university founded in 1665, and has been lately made the seat of a grand arsenal and also naval station. Pop. 24,547. Kiev, (ke'ef,) or KIEF, a town of European Ru ia, C. of a large govt. of same name, which comprises a part of the Ukraine, bet. Lat. 48° 30′ and 51° 50′ N., Lon. 28° 40' and 33° 25′ E. The town, situate on the Dnieper, was formerly the cap. of Ru ia. Its trade is chiefly with Ode a, Poltava, and Austria. Pop. 73,591. Kilda, (St..)
