Characterized by yellow-brown to black colored skin, close, black, loose hair, broad, thick nose, turned up lips and prognathous jaws; one of the five great divisions of man according to Blumenbach; living on the islands of the Pacific and Indian Oceans, the Malay Peninsula and Archipelago, Austral asia, and Madagascar. But modern ethnologists recognize three distinct races in these regions: the NEGRITOES, MALAYS, and AUSTRALIAN ABORIGINES (q.v.). The Malays may be derived from the Mongols.
