As adj .: Not e ential, not absolutely nece ary or indispensable; spec., applied to matters of faith or practice not considered nece ary to salva tion. B. As subst. A thing which is not absolutely nece ary or indispensable. non est, phr . [Lat. he (or it) is not.] A contraction of the Latin non est invent us =he was not found, he (or it) was not to be found, he (or it) was gone. chin, bench; go, gem; thin, this; *non est factum, phr . (Lat. it is not the fact or deed.] Law : The general i ue in an action on bond, or other deed, whereby the defendant formerly denied that to be his deed whereon he was sued.
