THOMAS H., (gal-lau-dět',) an American philanthropist, B. in Philadelphia, 1787. After a visit to Europe for an investigation of the deaf and dumb institutions there, founded and became principal of the Hartford Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb-the first institution of the kind inaugurated in the U.
