Though he had made some remarkable mechanical inventions, he was little known till, in 1855, he proposed " to convert five tons of cast-iron into molten malleable iron in fifteen minutes by simply blowing cold air through it." and within five years the price of merchant steel had been reduced three-fourths. The steel works which he founded repaid to the original investors after 14 years 81 times the amount originally invested (an average of nearly 100 per cent. every two months), a result probably unprecedented in the annals of commerce.
