(1847), tal. statesman and economist; entered Parliament in 1880; i of finance, 1893-94, and of the Treasury, 1894-96; premier and minister of the interior, 1906, 1909-10. As minister for foreign affairs, 1914-19, he conducted negotiations with the Central Empires for recognition of Ital. claims and aspirations, and on the break-down of these he negotiated the London treaty with the Hntente Powers. He was one of the Ttal. delegates at the Peace Conference, 1919. Author of Con it a dins in Sicily, 1876, and articles on politics and economics in Nuova An to logia; Mexico; mountainous in HE.; silver mining and stock-raising industries; some grain, tobacco, and sugar-cane produced; climate very dry.
