Harper, William

RAINEY, educator and author, born | at New Concord, O., July 26, 1856; received the degree of A.B. from Muskingum College, and Ph.D. from Yale University. He was profe or of the Semitic Languages (1886-91) and of Biblical Literature (1889-91) in Yale University. In 1891 he became the first president of the University of Chicago, which position he still holds (1897). His contributions to educational literature have been numerous and invaluable. Harper, in Kansas , a city of Harper co., 50 m. S. W. of Wichita, on A., T. & S. Fé and H. & S. R.Rs.; has large shipping trade in grain, wool, hides and live stock. Pop . (1895) 1,068.
