BERBERINE

n. Bu‘r’be*r-en, Lat.. berberin a, berberinum, Fr., berbérine. Ger., Berberin. It., Sp.. berberin a. An alkaloid, CapH,2NO, + 4#H,0, occurring in several species of Berberis, in cafumba, in the bark of Cœocline ‚polycarpa, the bark of Xanfhärylum clava Herculis (the xanthapicrite of Cheval lier and Pellet an), that of Geoffrea jam a i cens is (the jamaicine of Hüttenschmidt), and in many other plants. It isa bright-yellow microcrystalline powder, devoid of odor, and having a persistent bitter taste, sparingly soluble in cold alcohol and water, and readily soluble in hot alcohol and in hot water. Its physiological action is uncertain, salivation, diarrhoea. and various nervous symptoms being observed, but inconstantly, after its administration, according to some observers; according to others, it occasions a great variety of phenomena, acting particularly as a tonic to the capillary blood-ve els, pprodacine) hyperæmia and cedema, and elevating the arterial pre ure.
