joint stock company, founded 1670 by Prince Rupert and seventeen others, under charter from Charles II., for the importation of furs and skins into Gt. Britain from N. America. In 1869 its exclusive rights were ceded to the Brit. Government for $1,500,000, but the trade is still continued under certain reservations.
