Shields 1784; called to the Scotch bar 1806; profe or of Scots law in univ. of Edinb. 2 Dec. 1843 to death; had a library of 15,000 volumes; edited Erskine’s Principles of the law of Scotland 1827, and Lord Stair’s Institutions of the law of Scotland 1832; furnished notes and illustrations to J. Dalrymple’s The institutions of the laws of Scotland 1832; author of Lectures on the law of Scotland, 2 vols. 1864. d. 19 Great King st. Edinburgh 12 July 1861.
