(1862), Fr. novelist; 6 Charmes-sur-Moselle. His earlier writings are tainted with the decadent spirit, but in his later works he has shaken himself loose from what was more or le a literary pose and shown in ardent nationalism. The earlier stage was marked by the publication of Sous loeil des barbares (1888) Un homme libre (1889), and La Jardin de a Berenice (1891). Much more wholesome and vigorous was his cycle of three stories, Les der a cines (1897), L’appel au sold at (1900), and Leurs figures (1902). The most notable of his later writings were Le voyage de Sparte(1906), La mai- (1912). In 1889 he was elected as a Nationalist to the Chamber of Deputies, and re-elected in 1906. In the latter year he was admitted to membership in the French Academy. His autobiography, informative and interesting. Consult (1902), and Huneker, Egoists, a Book of Supermen (New York, 1909). ‘
