city and capital of Des Moines county, Ia.; on the Mi i ippi river and the Chicago, Burlington & Quiney and other trunk line railroads; 206 miles W. of Chieago. It is in a noted bituminous coal region; is an important distributing point in general trade and especially in grain; bas large building and paving brick plants, a considerable output of steam and gas engines, farming machinery and implements, patent medicines, and woolen goods, and-the machine shops of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy railroad. Pop. (1910) 23,234.
