Modena

(mo-da'nah,) a p. of N. Italy, b. N. by the river Po, and W. by Parma. Area, 966 sq. m. Surface mountainous, being intersected by the N. A pennines. Soil fertile and productive. After a long tenure of M. as a grand-duchy by princes of the house of Este, it lapsed in 1859 to the Sard in i an kingdom by the deposition of the last sovereign of the Este line, Francis V. Pop. 260,591. MODENA, C. of above p., in a plain watered by the Secchia and Panaro, is situate 24 m. W.N.W. of Bologna. It is a handsomely-built and flourishing place, with considerable manu fs.
