Previous to the incorporation of academies as universities the distinctions were only of masters and scholars. Masters and Doctors are mentioned 826. Gregory IX. (1227-41), instituted the inferior order of Bachelors. Degrees in law date from 1149, medicine 1384, and music 1463.
