Green, Right Rev. William Mercer

D.D. (University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, 1845), LL.D. (University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, 1880), Episcopalian, bishop of Mi i ippi; b. in Wilmington, N.C., May 2, 1798; graduated second in the cla at the University of North Carolina, 1818; ordained deacon 1821, priest 1822; became rector of St. John's, Williams burgh, N.C., 1821; of St. Matthew's, Hills borough, 1825; chaplain and profe or of belles-lettres in his alma mater, 1837; consecrated bishop, Feb. 24, 1850. Since 1866 he has been chancellor of the University of the South. He is "an anti-Calvin ist, and a Churchman of the old school." Besides sermons and addre es as chancellor, he has written memoirs of Bishops Ravens croft (New York, 1870) and Otey (1885).
