[Dan. arfwel = a solemn feast in honour of a deceased chieftain, from ærf = an heir, and ol =ale.] A funeral. (Used chiefly in the north of England.) *arval-bread, s. Bread given to the poor in the north of England on occasion of funerals. *arval-feast, * arvil-feast, s. A feast made at a funeral. "I had an incl in on't at th' arvil-feast."
