Mackenzie River

Largest river of Canada. It rises in the Rocky Mountains and in the Lacustrine region n. of the Great Plains, in numerous branches, and, after pa ing into several lakes, finds its way by a n.w. course to the Arctic Ocean. The name is applied only to that part below Great IMG:content-1191.jpg:[graphic] IMG:content-1192.png:[graphic] of large boats, either with lines or seines: young salted mackerel and menhaden are used as bait. 3,000 fish have been taken in one day by one man. Half of the fishing interest of our coast is involved in mackerel catching. In 1892, 17,041,736 lbs. were caught. The Spanish mackerel ( Scomberomorus or Cybium maculatus ) has eight or nine finlets behind the dorsal; along the sides are small round bronze spots. It is common s. of Cape Cod, but is not easily caught. Its eggs float during development.
