In ship - building, a curved timber built into the stern of a ship to support the stern-frame. Sternidæ (ster'ni-dē), n. pl. [NL., Sternidius (ster-nid'i-us), n.. [NL. S. aculiferus is a com mon North American species now placed in Lep to stylus. Its larva burrows under the bark of various trees.
