born in 1825, of Philadelphia, organized the system of municipal bounties during the Civil War. He wrote ‘‘ Superstition. and Force,’’ a ‘‘ History of the Inquisition of the Middle Ages,” and other scholarly works on medieval history. “Yeander.”? April 25, 1806, while the feeling in this country was intensely bitter toward Great Britain, a shot from the British war-cship “ Leander,” then lying off Sandy Hook, killed John Pierce, helmsman on an American coaster. The citizens of New York denounced the outrage in a ma meeting, and called upon the National Government for better protection of the harbor. A proclamation of the President interdicted British supplies and ordered the arrest of the ‘‘ Leander’s”” captain, if found within our jurisdiction.
