Donald (son of major James Moodie of Mel setter, Orkney). Entered navy 1808; lieut. 8 Dec. 1816 and placed on h.p.; went to the Cape Colony and entered the civil service there, resident magistrate at Port Francis 20 Feb. 1825 to 1828 and at Graham’s Town 1828–34; protector of slaves in the eastern districts 1830–4; superintendent of the Government bank, Cape Town 1840; secretary to government of Natal 29 Aug. 1845 to 1851; author of The Record, or a series of official papers relating to the native tribes of South Africa.
