YELLOW FEVER

is an infectious disease characterised by jaundice, hemorrhages, and an elevation of teraperature. The actual parasite which causes it is not yet known, but it is clear that mosquitoes can convey the disease just as they convey malaria from the sick to the healthy. The mosquito concerned is Stegomyia Jasciata, which is one of the commonest species met with between the 30th parallels. Its grubs breed in water tubs and ce -pools around the houses. Attention to this fact has had an excellent result. In Havane the draining of all yards, the covering of all exposed water near the house with oil, and the use cf mosquito nets has resulted in the stamping out of yellow fever in that town ten months later. Until these precautions were taken in 1901, yellow fever had never been absent from Havana for 140 years at least (sce Colonial Medical Reports for 1901 and 1902). Ycllow fever has its home in the West Indies and the West Coast of Africs, whence it is at times gr ea by shipping to distant ports. [s. 428]
