A Spanish prelate and author, a member of the Augustine order. He was in China from 1580 to 1583, and on his return spent two years in Mexico: subsequently he was bishop of the Lipari Islands, of Chiapas, and of Popayan. His account of China, published in 1586, contains also much of interest concerning America. An Society (1853-54). The Spaniards suffered greatly from Indian attacks and from famine. Mendoza finally left for Spain with a few companions, and died a maniac on the voyage.
