Father, a music teacher and bandmaster in the French army, first instructor in flute, violin ana piano playing; so rapid was his progre that at 10 he appeared with succe in public as flute soloist] several years elapsed before he again played m concerts; he received much valuable help from Guercy, a celebrated virtuoso; in 1858 he came under the instruction of Doras, and in Teyte 1860 followed him to the Paris Cons., winning a first prize in flute playing; in 1862 won a nrst prize in harmony, and one in 1865 in counterpoint ana fugue; 1862-64 in orchestra of Opdra Comique, then in the Grand Op6ra orch., 1871 solo flutist; 1890 tnird condr., and in 1893 first condr., 1892-1901 condr. Soc. des Concerts; 1893 prof, of flute at the Cons, ana in charge of the orchestral cla ; 1872 founded Soc. Cla i que, consisting of To scan in i, a quintet of strings ana one of wind instruments, for performance of chamber music combinations.
