A species of theodolite, consisting of a telescope revolving in a vertical plane on a horizontal axis, as in a transit-instrument, combined with a compa , a graduated horizontal limb, etc., used for running lines, observing bearings, horizontal angles, and the like; called also surveyor’s transit .
